One Act

One act is all it takes
One act can cause a thousand heartbreaks
I remember when there was innocence
          upon your face
Now I see a mask of happiness
Bad memories it doesn't erase
Oh they go away for a little while
Then they return and prevent
          you from being a child
Oh my child how I hurt for you
How I wish I had protected you
I didn't know I couldn't have foreseen
But saying this doesn't help
          you anyway
How I wish I could take your pain away
Hold you close and say it's okay
But that would be a lie so
I will help you work through
          your pain and grow
And someday hopefully
Not in too many years
We'll be sharing happiness
Because we've shed all the tears
